HARRY POTTER LIVES !!! Barnes and Noble Bookstore of Morris Plains, NJ hired me to draw Caricatures at their big event last night.
The new Harry Potter book hit the stores at 12:00 midnight. So there were festivities with things like Costumes, Scones, Owls, and ME !!

I was really on. To be on the safe side, I tell people that I can draw approximately 10 Caricatures per hour. But this time, I counted 94 in 4 hours!
That's over 23 faces per hour. And people were real impressed with the likenesses too. There was no scrimping there.

What had happened was that I came to the event with 58 prepared (already signed) cardstocks. And a bunch of signed brown papers.
I needed only about 20 brown papers, and I used up ALL of the cardstocks. I was pushing myself to draw fast because the line went straight through the large store. Still 45 minutes left, I just pulled out my plain computer paper and kept drawing. Made at least 15 more. (one page had 2 people on it.) I figure it's the Artwork they're buying, not the paper.

I was so glad to be part of that. It's a tuff job, but somebody's got to do it. Smile. I considered it part of my work to watch a Harry Potter movie this week (smile). The one where he takes the Golden Egg from the Dragon. So exciting.

The people were so into it. Wearing big round glasses, capes, ties. 'Scars' painted on their faces. Just before midnight, I was there for the big store-wide countdown. I love my job.

My friend Elgin saw this picture that I drew. He loved it. Wanted to play even more. He added an extra inch to the top of the hair:

What would happen if.....

Thank goodness for digital cameras, scanners, photocopiers, computers.... Fireworks at Jones Beach were cancelled on account of rain.
So here I am. I took one of the pictures that I posted earlier today, and I said...."What would happen if....."

What would happen if I added shading?

Or what would happen if I added simple colors?

Or what would happen if I redrew it with bright markers?

Now, pretty colors!

Very quick Party Caricatures. Sometimes people ask for 2 people to be drawn on the page. - how to do that without a predraw:

Pretty much the same way I draw one person without a predraw! But just a little smaller. Don't worry about overlapping. Don't worry about how they're going to relate. Make it happen in the moment when you get there.

Here are 2 doubles that I quickly drew here in the studio. It comes out even better at a party. Like last weekend when I drew 3 guys - the one in the center was wearing sunglasses that looked like beer-mugs, the 2nd one had very thick lips. When the onlookers partied it up, made everyone laugh about it, the 3rd guy said that he wanted to be the one with the thick lips. It was all much fun to have everyone comparing in the moment. What a happy picture that one was.

Anyway, here are 2 tamer doubles - done in the quiet of my studio:

Middle of the night. Just me and my paintbrush. And a couple of reference pictures of a man today and of the same man from years ago.

This was a commission for a 24 x 30 acrylic Caricature for a man who was retiring. It was my first time doing an acrylic Caricature. Here's what came out of me. I like it. I like the experience. I know when I really get into my painting, when I'm reallyl creating:

And here's the reference pictures that I was working from:

I have just finished a couple of weeks of back-to-back gigs! It's been wonderful, but most of the time I didn't bring my camera. Because it breaks my flow.

But one of the gigs is a slower pace.
I do it every year at a High School where the graduation Seniors meander over at their convenience.
The school just has me drawing simple black/white line -pictures.
So it was real easy to handle my camera at that one.
What a wonderful world. So many interesting people to see:
