Here's a Caricature. A picture which exaggerates the way this young man looks. He has a long nose and puppy-dog eyes:

And here it is again. But this time, I made the nose longer. They eyes cartoonier. The strong value contrast pure black and white:

Here's another Caricature. The self-content man's collar was too tight for his fleshy neck. But he was happy anyway. Isn't that cute?

But here he is again. This time, I expanded the loose skin out to be floppier. I added more form to the face and cheeks. I exaggerated the expression on those pursed lips:

And here's another picture. I only drew it once. It is Caricature:

Into the city again today. To handle tons of paperwork for the Powers That Be. (I put in for my permit for Face Painting in Central Park next year.)

I just have not been satisfied with stiff, correct pictures these days.
Started drawing this lady on the train, got to her big hair which was going to be tedious, and just 'let'r rip'. Loosened up.

Not satisfied today to just draw the people, I spent time making 'finished pictures'. Here are some more people from the train:

We got stuck in the train for hours. A power-line or something was down. The hoards of people. Reminded me of'Titanic' or something.

I entertained myself by drawing pictures. I tried to remember the power of Babcat's show last night, and I drew his picture from memory. Funny that one of the passengers looked over at what I was doing and asked if I was drawing the way the passengers felt - stuck there on that train while they didn't even pull into a station to let us out.

I guess I did well
because the Psychobilly music is supposed to be wild.
Bobcat is such an outgoing gentleman, and I was concentrating hard to get beyond his personal charisma to represent the show that he was acting out last night.

I had a happy day today. Woke early to draw at an early party in the city, had free time, and then checked out the Arkhams who were playing at the Knitting Factory.

Didn't know what to do with my free time, so I set up for street Caricatures. Started out slow, needed something to draw, so I drew the vender who was sitting next to me. We were actually back to back, so what I saw was the back of his head. It was well done. It did catch people's attention, and I was busy 'til I had to rush to get to the show. Here it is:

I'm usually inspired to dance around when I hear the Arkhams - especially their instrumentals, which is what they started the show with. So, as usual, I didn't draw them. I was dancing. But I did draw Sasquatch later, when Sasquatch and the Sickobillies came on. Poor drawing conditions, standing there not set up, in the dark - I draw under all sorts of conditions. The music is so wild, the art of it so basic, that I just couldn't get away with nice controlled stuff. I just had to let loose in my drawings - just like the bands let loose in their music. I felt acknowledged when I realized that Bobcat had looked over, nodded, and gave the the 'thumbs up' while I was drawing Sasquatch with no predraw. Raw Direct Art. Here are three pictures of Sasquatch:

Street Caricatures. Did more learning than selling today.
One woman who was buying soap at a table nearby had a real interesting-looking dog.
I think it's called a Bassett Hound.
I think it's the kind of dog that was on a tv show that I liked when I was very young - called Cleo the Talking Dog.
The woman didn't pay me any attention. But I came around to draw the dog for my own collection. Here's what I got:

The dog didn't actually have big polka-dots like I drew. But s/he had large areas of brown and white. Just as I got up to color, the woman whisked her tag-along dog away. Here for an instant. Caught for an instant. Life is interesting - so much to see.

Doing the job right.
Client called for this weekend.
He understands that a real artist can't predict ahead of time
what any picture is going to look like when it's finished.
But, but he says,
he wants the women to look beautiful.
"You can play around a little with the men,
but draw the women plainly - Just sort of a likeness."

And he's going to have about 60 people there -
and I can only give him 3 hours maximum - I'm not available to start earlier.
Even though he knows that's more people than I'd expect to draw in 3 hours,
I might want to push myself - sometimes it's fun to try.

This is part of my development, too.
Why not warm up towards drawing the way the client wants?
Might as well.

So I want to stick to the social 'knowledge' of what women supposedly want to look like. And I want to draw fast and free - really limit the predraw.

I looked for some photos on the web. Drew just the line-work (I'll do some shading and color at the bbq of course. BTW, he calls his party a "Tropical (Long) Island Party" Isn't that cute?)

Here's the first one I drew. No predraw at all.
And sure enough, she ended up too big for the page:

So here's the 2nd one I drew. I predrew only an oval with an X and hairshape and neck. Perfect.

Got a little wilder with a guy:

And remembered that client asked if I could do couples together on one page. Here's one. Aghk. Client chose the small size. I remember how small I have to draw to put more than one on such a small page:
